Durban witnessed a momentous sporting event as the KwaZulu-Natal Association of Blind Cricket (KZNABC) successfully hosted the first-ever Blind Cricket Youth Cup recently, at Kingsmead Oval. The tournament featured a thrilling series between the Hollywoodbets Blind Dolphins and the North West Blind Dragons.
Over the course of three action-packed days, cricket enthusiasts and supporters gathered to witness the blind cricketers showcase their remarkable skills and sportsmanship. Two matches were held daily, with a final match concluding the captivating event on 18 June.
Adding to the camaraderie and the success of the tournament, students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Biokinetics, Exercise, and Leisure Sciences (BELS) stepped forward to volunteer. These students were not only responsible for preparing food but also for ensuring the players’ well-being and comfort before each match.
Dr Khumbuzile Khumalo (KK), a lecturer from BELS, expressed her pride in participating in the Blind Cricket Youth Cup. The collaboration between the KZN Association for Blind Cricket and UKZN showcased the power of effective teamwork and inclusion. Khumalo also highlighted the enriching experience the students had while interacting with blind individuals for the first time in their lives. It not only deepened their understanding of cricket for people with disabilities but also ignited a passion for empowering women in blind cricket.
The student volunteers were deeply moved by the resilience and determination displayed by the visually impaired athletes. They expressed their honour and gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such a heart-warming event. Interacting closely with the Hollywoodbets Dolphins Blind Cricket players left a lasting impact on the students, who vowed to repeat their volunteer efforts if given the chance in the future.
The Blind Cricket Youth Cup featured the North West Blind Dragons competing fiercely against the Hollywoodbets Blind Dolphins. The Blind Dragons displayed great spirit on the field but the Blind Dolphins emerged victorious, securing a remarkable 5-0 series win.
KZNBCA Media and Liaison Officer Mr Gift Zungu said he was thrilled by the participation of the Blind Cricket community in the historic event. He emphasised that for the majority of players it provided valuable experience, especially those playing at a provincial level for the first time.
The success of the Blind Cricket Youth Cup would not have been possible without the support of sponsors such as Aquelle, Oasis Water, Ashraful Aid, the KZN Cricket Union, South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF), Hypercheck, and BELS. The event showcased the tremendous growth of blind cricket and the enthusiasm of players. However, there are still challenges, especially the need for more sponsorship to further develop and promote the sport.
The Blind Cricket Youth Cup left an indelible mark on all involved, fostering a sense of unity and admiration for the skills and dedication of visually impaired athletes.
