The UKZN Mini Habitable Planet Workshop (MHPW) in collaboration with the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science hosted its fourth winter school programme at the School of Life Sciences under the theme: Inspire Township Learners to Pursue Science-Related Careers.
UKZN MHPW invited high school learners from KwaMashu, Clermont and KwaDabeka to attend offering learners an inspiring, educative and fun five-day programme.
On the first day participants were welcomed by the Dean and Head of the School of Life Sciences, Professor Ademola Olaniran, followed by a fascinating presentation on microbiology by Professor Hafizah Chenia, an associate professor in the Microbiology Discipline.
The lecture ended with captivating laboratory experiments. Under the guidance of enthusiastic postgraduates and lab demonstrators, the students delved into titration, elephant toothpaste experiments, DNA extraction, microscopy techniques and testing water for E. coli. These practical sessions provided invaluable opportunities for the learners to observe scientific phenomena first hand, ask questions, and acquire essential laboratory skills.
Engaging in these experiments not only fostered their interest in science but also demonstrated the potential career paths they could pursue in the fields of microbiology, chemistry, and environmental science. The day concluded with a visit to the Science Technology Education Centre (STEC) where learners were introduced to the world of coding through an exciting programming activity aimed at enhancing problem-solving abilities and logical thinking while inspiring them to pursue the fascinating field of computer science.
On day two, learners visited uShaka Marine World where the day began with an enlightening lecture focusing on climate change awareness during which students heard about the implications of the impact on oceans and various strategies to mitigate it. The group then went on a marine life exploration around uShaka’s aquariums, learning about coral reefs and coral bleaching, and being treated to an entertaining dolphin show. Afterwards, they delved into ocean acidification experiments and the day concluded with an inspiring presentation on various marine careers offered at uShaka.
Day three challenged the students to showcase their public speaking skills and critical thinking abilities in a spirited debate tournament. The topics included the fourth industrial revolution, robotics, and artificial intelligence in the job market which produced thought-provoking debates allowing participants to develop their debating skills and build self-confidence. In addition to the debates, the students took part in a science quiz which tested their knowledge and understanding of various scientific concepts. The friendly competition fostered a sense of good fellowship among the learners and heightened their passion for scientific exploration.
The focus on Day four shifted towards career exploration, as academics from various UKZN Schools, including Life Sciences, Chemistry and Physics, Engineering, and Health Sciences specialists, presented on the diverse disciplines and degrees offered. This exposure helped the learners understand the various pathways available to pursue their interests in science.
To broaden their horizons further, representatives from institutions including the Transnet Maritime School of Excellence, eThekwini Transport Authority, and the KZN Sharks Board shared valuable insights into career opportunities offered by their organisations.
The final day was dedicated to celebrating the achievements of participants with certificates awarded to all participants for their active engagement and dedication throughout the programme. Youngsters who won challenges and quizzes were recognised and celebrated for their achievements.
Ms Weliswa Kunene, the leader of the UKZN Mini Habitable Planet Workshop, was proud of the success of the programme and thanked the following individuals for their input Dr Sibusiso Senzani, Ms Lungelwa Radebe, Ms Mendy Shozi, Ms Bonginhlanhla Ndlovu, Ms Nokuphiwa Kunene and Ms Andile Mdhlalose. Educators and learners made positive comments about the experiences they had throughout the programme.
A learner extended heartfelt gratitude to UKZN for providing her with an opportunity to be part of the programme. ‘I learned so much in such a short period of time! The microbiology lab experiments and the engaging lectures opened my eyes to the wonders of science, and I am now more passionate about pursuing a career in this field. This programme has given me clarity about my future career path, and I am truly grateful to UKZN for this life-changing experience. Thank you for inspiring me and showing me that I can achieve my dreams in science!’
