UKZN’s Discipline of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering embarked on a spring clean to streamline its resources and pave the way for an innovative design laboratory catering to student needs.

The meticulous process involved identifying and collecting old, broken, and redundant equipment, which was then responsibly scrapped through an e-waste recycling service. Emphasising environmental responsibility, the recycler also partnered with a colleague to address the accumulated paper associated with the discarded equipment.
This concerted effort not only demonstrated the Discipline’s commitment to efficient resource management but also set the stage for a broader community impact. Looking ahead, it aims to extend its support beyond the University premises by exploring ways to assist the community in responsibly recycling electronic waste.
During the clean-up, several training kits and components were identified that were either no longer in use or surplus to requirements. These were donated to Thekwini TVET College on 30 January, fostering future collaboration with neighbouring educational institutions, with the aim of establishing an ongoing partnership. The Discipline hopes to become a beacon of environmentally responsible practices, setting an example for the academic community and beyond.
