In a world where plastic waste threatens our environment daily, one initiative is proving that a small act can spark a major impact. The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has partnered with the Sweethearts Wheelchair Foundation in a project that transforms everyday plastic waste into life-changing mobility aids – and they need your help.

The Tops and Tags Project invites all UKZN staff and students to collect plastic bottle tops and bread tags. These seemingly insignificant items are more than just litter – they’re the currency of compassion. Through a simple process of collection and recycling, the Sweethearts Foundation exchanges these plastics for funds, which are then used to buy wheelchairs for people in need.

‘This initiative is a reminder that making a difference doesn’t always require grand gestures,’ says Ms Silindile Mchunu from the Corporate Relations Division. ‘Something as simple as saving a bread tag can help someone gain mobility.’

‘As a member of the UKZN community and someone who understands the importance of inclusivity and dignity, I find the Tops and Tags Project deeply inspiring. Each cap or tag may seem small, but when we come together, our collective efforts create life-changing opportunities. This is more than just recycling – it’s about restoring independence and spreading hope.’

Here’s how you can be part of the movement:

  • Drop-off bins are conveniently located near cafeterias across all UKZN campuses. Simply collect and deposit your clean plastic tops and tags.
  • UKZN staff can also send their collections via internal mail to:
Westville Campus | MW Makgoba Admin Building | Corporate Relations Division | Ground Floor.

The beauty of the Tops and Tags Project lies in its simplicity. It transforms waste into hope, one top at a time.

So, the next time you twist off a bottle cap or open a loaf of bread, remember: that tiny piece of plastic could help someone move again. Let’s turn our everyday habits into extraordinary acts of kindness.

Together, we can turn waste into mobility.
